Does an Animal Tracking Bracelet Follow a Real Animal?
Summary
An animal tracking bracelet is a bracelet paired with a digital wildlife-tracking experience. The bracelet itself is not a GPS device. With Fahlo’s bracelets, a QR code on a tracking card unlocks an animal in the Fahlo app, and its path appears on an interactive map built from data supplied by conservation partners.
The animal is real, but the map is not a guaranteed live location. Fahlo says the path shown may be live, delayed, or historical, depending on safety rules agreed with its nonprofit partners.
For a gift, check the species, the partner, the bracelet size, and whether the recipient’s phone can run the app.
The bracelet unlocks the experience; it is not the tracking device
The name can make the product sound like a wearable GPS tracker. That is not how it works.
The wildlife tracking device is part of a research or conservation program. The bracelet gives the customer access to the digital experience built from that data. Fahlo’s FAQ says “Every purchase comes with a QR code to scan right on the app to start tracking your new animal,” and each code is single-use: once redeemed, it “can’t be used on another device.”
A real animal does not mean a real-time public location
Each product page is headed “Track A Real” followed by the animal, and each carries the same note: “Every Fahlo tracking experience includes the Fahlo Protection Ping™.” Whether the path is live, delayed, or historical is “based on required safety protocol in accordance with our nonprofit partners.”
Tags also stop working eventually. The FAQ says “On average, transmitters will send signals for around one year,” sometimes up to two years and sometimes less than one, and “We guarantee tracking for six months.”
Tracking technology varies by species
Different animals are monitored with different tools. Fahlo’s giraffe page says “Tracked via GPS tail tag,” while its dolphin and shark pages describe SPOT, or Smart Position and Temperature, tags. The dolphin page adds that the dolphins carry satellite-linked transmitters that “report their locations and other data every other day.” Check the species page if the tracking method matters to you.
The conservation partner is part of the purchase
The partners named on the three pages are the Somali Giraffe Project for giraffes, the FIU Marine Mammal Ecology Lab for dolphins (the same page also calls it the FIU Marine Conservation Ecology Lab), and Saving the Blue for sharks. Fahlo says it “donates 10% of all profits to our nonprofit partners.” That figure comes from the company itself, and its own pages give two different donation totals: “$3,000,000+” on the home page and “over $4 million” in the FAQ.
Choose the species before the bead color
For a gift, the recipient’s favorite animal is the obvious first filter, and the tracking story is what separates this from an ordinary stretch-bead bracelet. Species come and go: Fahlo’s home page groups the giraffe with its Season 1 animals and says they are “Leaving Soon.”
Then look at the bracelet. The product pages list “Sizing: Elastic, one size fits most” and say the beads are “natural crushed stone or glass,” so color and pattern vary from one bracelet to the next.
The FAQ gives the size: the bracelets “typically measure 7–7.5 in (17.8–19 cm),” and Fahlo does not currently carry children’s sizes. A 7-inch bracelet on a 6-inch wrist has an inch to spare, while on a 7.5-inch wrist it has to stretch to go around.
The app is part of the product
The FAQ lists Android 13 or later and iOS 17.6 or later for the app, and says “After your initial purchase, there are no additional costs to track your animal.” The dolphin page says you learn the animal’s “name, photo, size.”
Where you buy matters. “Every online bracelet order includes a card with your QR code at no extra cost,” but tracking cards “are not currently available with tracking plush or in-store bracelet purchases,” though Fahlo says they will be available in stores in the future.
